ABSTRACT
Management of epileptic patients in the perioperative period is an anesthetic challenge. New drugs and surgical procedures are being used to treat epilepsy. Various anaesthetics exhibit both proconvulsant and anticonvulsant properties at different doses and under different physiologic conditions. Consequently, the anesthetic management of epileptic patients must be planned accordingly. This article will focus on the advances in the treatment of epilepsy, as well as the management of status epilepticus and the perioperative management of an epileptic patient during surgical procedures.
