Dear colleagues,

The firs tissue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2022 presents a variety of scientific articles.

The systematic review article of Guimarães Pereira JE et al. presents the efficacy and safety of medicinal cannabis on clinical outcomes of patients suffering from sickle cell (SCD) anemia pain. Due to the lack of evidence in the current literature, the authors noted in their conclusion, the need for large RCTs in order to evaluate the impact of cannabis use among SCD patients on quality of life and also on the controversial association between cannabis use and an increase in Emergency Room visits.

Next, the article of Aslanidis Th et al. reviews the available literature about the possible need for a new definition of death due to the fact that the advance of resuscitation medicine (in intensive care units or not) profoundly modified the durations of agony and the survival times, and perhaps also the essential meaning of death.

The retrospective clinical study of Deligianni M et al. showed that hypoxia during one lung ventilation (OLV) did not have negative impact on early outcome in patients that underwent thoracic surgical procedures,… Continue reading

It is noted that screening ICU protocols can lead to an early identification and proper therapeutic interventions.

The following case report of Aslanidis Th et al. presents a case of extreme hyperferrinemia in a male criticall ill patient with COVID-19 along with a short synthesis of the available literature.

The next article of Sarakatsanou Ch et al. describes the anesthetic considerations and management of a child with Friedreich’s ataxia during orthopedic surgery. It is reported that although there are various approaches to anesthesia techniques for these patients, it is preferable to choose regional… Continue reading

The first issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2021 includes various articles concerning perioperative medicine. The first article of this issue is a review of Bersot et al, which attempts to gather the evolving evidence on different ventilation strategies concerning severe "atypical" ARDS of COVID-19 patients. The authors conclude that the main features of respiratory mechanics, the response to treatment (such as oxygenation response to lung recruitment maneuvers or prone position) and prognosis are similar in COVID-19 and non- COVID-19 ARDS patients. The oxygenation response to LRM and a high PEEP appear to be very heterogeneous in COVID-19 ARDS; this would argue in favor of a personalized ventilation strategy... Continue reading

Dear colleagues,

In this issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine the first article of Massa E, et al answers vital questions concerning urgent readmissions to the ICU. It emphasizes that although a lot of efforts are being made to reduce them, these adverse events still exist. It provides also evidence, from current published literature, that readmitted patients to the ICU have a much poorer prognosis and higher mortality rates compared with other hospitalized patients.
