Dear colleagues,

The editorial board of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine presents the second issue for 2026, which covers a variety of topics related to the fields of perioperative and emergency medicine.

The first study by Nikolaidou O. et al. provides the first detailed analysis of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA; n=302) using data from the EuReCa-THREE registry in the Thessaloniki EMS region.  The study showed that OHCA occurred mainly in older adults and at home, although a substantial proportion involved working-age individuals. ROSC was achieved in approximately one third of EMS-treated patients, with an initial shockable rhythm being the strongest predictor of successful resuscitation. The findings highlight the need for improved community CPR, early defibrillation and OHCA surveillance in Greece.

The second article of Nikolaidou C. et al. is a retrospective analysis of surgical emergencies visits, in an urban secondary hospital in Northern Greece, especially the years after the pandemic. The authors noted that that surgical emergency volume fell by 40% during the pandemic before rising again from 2023 to 2025, with trauma identified as the leading cause of admissions.

Next, the article of Fengoudaki M. et al. described the case of a 65-year-old lung cancer patient, who… Continue reading

The European Registry of Cardiac Arrest Study THREE (EuReCa-THREE) prospectively collected standardized out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data across participating European countries using the Utstein reporting framework. Participation in EuReCa-THREE provided an opportunity to describe OHCA characteristics and outcomes in Greece and to compare them with contemporary European data. Continue reading
During the COVID-19 pandemic, surgical emergencies visits in emergency department recorded a global decrease. We conducted a retrospective study to examine the surgical emergencies visits in an urban secondary hospital in Northern Greece, especially the years after the pandemic. Continue reading
Double Lumen endobronchial Tubes (DLTs) are the default choice for achieving lung isolation when One Lung Ventilation (OLV) is indicated. DLTs are the preferred choice since their insertion is quicker, they are less prone to displacement, lung deflation is accomplished faster and secretions suctioning from both lungs is feasible. Perioperative anaphylaxis is a rare but potentially life-threatening event requiring rapid recognition and immediate intervention. Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) remain among the most common culprits, with rocuronium being a frequent trigger. This report presents a case of severe anaphylaxis during anesthesia induction, followed by a second uneventful anesthetic exposure after modification of the anesthetic approach. Continue reading
