Dear colleagues
The second issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2024 presents various articles concerning perioperative medicine,
The first article is the clinical study of Fyntanidou B et al. which investigates the possible impact of total infusion time of NaCl 7.5% on its efficacy in normovolemic patients. The authors concluded that hypertonic NaCl 7.5% efficacy decreases to zero when total infusion time exceeds 10min.
The first case report of Zografidou P et al. presents the perioperative management of a patient with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), with left ventricular ejection fraction less than 15%, at 27 weeks of gestation, who underwent for emergency caesarean section. The authors noted that PPCM is related with high morbidity and mortality that can be fatal for mother and fetus and also can cause a chronic decline of mother’s quality of life. Early diagnosis, continuous monitoring, and prolonged treatment therapy (medication selection must be done carefully and with respect for the needs of breastfeeding or pregnant women) may be advantageous for PPCM.
The second case report of Zografidou P et al. describes a patient who was already treated with low-molecular-weight heparin for a gamma knife removal of a thalamic lesion and presented with a… Continue reading

The first issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2024 presents various articles concerning perioperative medicine.
Muhammad Umar Younis, in his review article, aims to determine the prevalence of burnout among surgeons, to identify the risk factors for it and to employ mitigation strategies to reduce the likelihood of burnout. The author notes that the most commonly identified risk factors for surgeons’ burnout are age, marital status, financial standing, the outcome of their interest, the balance between work and personal life, experience in the field, and gender. He concludes that the above responsible factors should be explored by surgeons, hospital management boards, training centers in order to find ways to prevent it and to ensure a healthy workplace environment and high-quality surgical patient care.
The next article of Soulountsi V et al. describes the case of a patient, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with oligemic shock, due to severe bleeding from the right carotid artery, after a central venous catheter placement in the right jugular vein. During patient’s stay in the ICU, comprehensive laboratory work-up led to the diagnosis of acquired hemophilia A (AHA), a rare bleeding disorder caused by autoantibodies to… Continue reading
Dear colleagues,
The first issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2023 presents a systematic review article of Papageorgiou L et al, in which the authors reviewed the existing evidence regarding superiority of ketofol (ketamine/propofol) in mitigating cardiorespiratory effects when administered as a main agent for procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) in comparison to other drugs administered for such purposes underlying the safety and efficacy profile of this cocktail medication. They found limited evidence to support superiority of ketofol compared to other agents, specifically to propofol. They noted that the addition of ketamine to propofol in sub-dissociative doses is associated with less respiratory and haemodynamic complications during PSA, while achieving adequate analgesia and deeper sedation, possibly more amnesia and consequently high satisfaction in both patients and health-care professionals.
The next article of Varvarousi G et al was aimed to present the current knowledge on the treatment of postdural puncture headache (PDPH) in obstetric anesthesia practice, given to the fact that the incidence of accidental dural puncture complicating epidural cathether placement, in obstetric patients, varies between 0,13-0,91%.
The review article of Schizodimos Th et al described several systemic factors (arterial hypotension, low cardiac output, hypercapnia, hypocapnia, systemic hypoxia, anemia,… Continue reading

The fourth issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2022 presents various case reports concerning perioperative medicine.
The case of Sivrioğlu D et al. presents the perioperative management of an 8-year-old patient with Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSD type-Ia), with malignant transformation of hepatic adenoma, that underwent liver transplantation. The authors note that the anesthetic management of these patients has important implications for anesthesiologists due to different system involvements.
The case report of Uslu A et al. presents the preparation and management of non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) in an 8-year-old patient diagnosed with VACTERL syndrome (multiple congenital malformations: vertebral, cardiac, tracheo-esophageal, renal and extremity anomalies, cardiac anomaly-large secundum ASD-, right renal agenesis, operated tracheoesophageal fistula and esophageal atresia).
The article of Kandemir E et al. evaluates the anesthetic management and considerations of a glycogen storage disease type 1a pediatric patient with air embolism during liver transplantation. The authors conclude a multidisciplinary approach and care should be taken in terms of limiting the presence of perioperative complications.
Next, the article of Papagiannopoulou O et al. shows that the intraoperative use of transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) establishes the diagnosis (aneurysm dissection of the ascending aorta, a large thrombus… Continue reading
Dear colleagues,
The second issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2022 presents various articles including Reviews Articles and Case Reports concerning perioperative medicine.
The review article of Varvarousi G et al. reviews the perioperative management of haemotherapy in obstetric patients with haemorrhage and coagulopathy abnormalities. Authors concluded that hypofibrinogenemia is the most common coagulation disorder in these patients. They also noted that point-of-care viscoelastic testing contributes to early identification and targeted treatment in obstetric bleeding and that timely administration of tranexamic acid is considered important in order to reduce blood loss for the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage.
The next review article of Zafeiriadis et al. describes the ethical and philosophical aspects of intraoperative pain management. The authors emphasize that these aspects are of great importance because the presence of complications, due to inadequate pain control during general anesthesia, comes mainly from the anesthetists’ unawareness about the patient’s exact nociceptive depth. They also noted that the need for efficient intraoperative monitoring of the patient’s nociception level is of extreme value, when considered through the bioethical and philosophical approach, in order the anesthetists to fulfil their preliminary duty, this of pain control.
The following article of Fyntanidou B et… Continue reading
Dear colleagues,
The firs tissue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2022 presents a variety of scientific articles.
The systematic review article of Guimarães Pereira JE et al. presents the efficacy and safety of medicinal cannabis on clinical outcomes of patients suffering from sickle cell (SCD) anemia pain. Due to the lack of evidence in the current literature, the authors noted in their conclusion, the need for large RCTs in order to evaluate the impact of cannabis use among SCD patients on quality of life and also on the controversial association between cannabis use and an increase in Emergency Room visits.
Next, the article of Aslanidis Th et al. reviews the available literature about the possible need for a new definition of death due to the fact that the advance of resuscitation medicine (in intensive care units or not) profoundly modified the durations of agony and the survival times, and perhaps also the essential meaning of death.
The retrospective clinical study of Deligianni M et al. showed that hypoxia during one lung ventilation (OLV) did not have negative impact on early outcome in patients that underwent thoracic surgical procedures, on the precondition that there was no underlying… Continue reading
