ABSTRACT

Despite of great interest in understanding the pain mechanisms and pain management, and the foundation of acute pain services; numbers of patients still suffer unacceptable pain even today. Surveys show that there are not many improvements in this area. So, it is quite clear that the solution to post operative pain is not just developing a single technique. New modes of noninvasive drug delivery and alternative medicine interventions have become more and more acceptable. Thus, methods such electroanalgesia and acupuncture may form part of holistic approach to pain management in the acute post operative pain in future, as they are already a part of chronic pain management. In this review of postoperative pain relief, consideration will be given to advances in our understanding of the role of new noninvasive modes of drug delivery and non-pharmacological techniques.
