Dear colleagues
The second issue of the Greek e-journal of Perioperative Medicine for 2023 presents five articles concerning perioperative medicine.
The review article of Soulountsi V et al. focuses on medical nutrition therapy in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Authors note that the administration of the optimal amount of nutritional therapy is difficult in ICU patients, due to numerous factors that may lead to significant daily variations in energy expenditure. They describe the current nutritional guidelines and also a new generation calorimeter, Q-NRG, which is based on an international multicenter study (ICALIC) and is supported by academic societies.
Next, the observational study of Fyntanidou B et al. presents the prehospital management of patients with near fatal anaphylaxis, by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Thessaloniki, Greece. The study also reviews the current literature concerning the prehospital management of these patients and focuses on the early administration of epinephrine as a first line treatment of severe anaphylaxis.
The case of Aslanidis Th et al. reports the anaesthetic management of a paraplegic patient who underwent an orthopaedic surgery. Authors also perform a short literature review on the subject.
The following case report of Varvarousi G et al. describes the anaesthetic challenges in management of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis, who underwent elective gynaecological oncologic procedure. The authors note that titration of drugs and adequate monitoring may improve surgical conditions and decrease the incidence of anaesthesia-related complications by reducing the consumption of drugs.
The final article of Gökdemir BN et al. presents the anesthetic considerations and the perioperative management of a 9-year-old male pediatric patient with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), who underwent adenoidectomy-tonsillectomy surgery. Authors concluded that the anesthetic management of PWS patients requires special perioperative planning and care due to syndrome’s multisystem involvement.
